Topic of the Month Critical Race Theory
Critical Race Theory (CRT) teaches race is a social construct developed and used by one race to oppress
and exploit another race via laws and governing institutions. As applied to the United States (US),
Critical Race theorists teach that white people use US laws and intuitions to create and maintain
political, economic, and social inequalities again non-white people, specifically black people. CRT bases its
intellectual foundations in Critical Theory (CT) and Critical Legal Studies (CLS).

Topic of the Month Critical Race Theory
CT started in Germany as a Karl Marx and Sigmund Freud inspired thought that strives to
critique and change societal structures created by capitalists to oppress the working people.
LS is an American off shoot of CT that focused on the specific societal structures of laws and
egal institutions created by capitalists to oppress the working people. CRT is CLS ideas
through the lens of “certain” European philosophers, “radical” US Civil Rights “radical”
US feminism thought leaders. (Descriptions of CRT in quotes from Delgado’s &

Topic Of the Month Critical Race Theory
This theory applies the same idea of oppressor and oppressed based institutions with
the substitution of capitalists for whites and working people for non-whites. Below provides
